JCU is a leading tertiary institution in Australia and the Asia Pacific and is ranked in the top 2% of universities worldwide. Our Strategic Intent is to create a brighter future for life in the tropics worldwide, through graduates and discoveries that make a difference, and this is given effect through our local, national, and international connections, collaborations, and partnerships. We are a University signatory to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and have agreed to play our role in understanding and responding to challenges facing the world. Teaching and research are global endeavors. Engaging with partners around the world, we will amplify our impact and relevance to generate far-reaching benefits for communities around the world.

Whilst we draw strength and identity from our place in the world, JCU recognizes that in a rapidly changing, interconnected world our ability to create positive change for our students, our staff, and the communities in which we engage requires a highly effective partnership network across all regions of the world. It is in this context that I am pleased to present the JCU International Engagement Strategy 2025. As Australia’s only university established to focus on the issues of Northern Australia and the Tropics worldwide, JCU is dedicated to helping the world’s tropical regions to prosper. The University Council is the principal governing body of the University. Its main role is to oversee the affairs of the University and ensure that the appropriate structures, policies, processes, and planning are in place for JCU to effectively manage its activities and achieve its goals. The Council is also responsible for setting and reviewing JCU's strategic direction, as outlined in the Statement of Strategic Intent.
